Dr. Laszlo Horvath, SBIO department, has been mentioned in two articles this week! He was interviewed by Gary Forger with Modern Materials Handling for an article about CPULD’s work on testing pallets to help protect products in the supply chain, and particularly in the booming e-commerce supply chains. Horvath was also quoted in an article on Bloomberg.com about the current state of the pallet market and wood still being the primary pallet manufacturing material. Check out both articles below!

That’s exactly what they want to know at the Virginia Tech packaging center dedicated to finding better ways to protect everything in the supply chain. The idea is to figure this out before the first shipment goes awry. There’s nothing simpler than the basic pallet. Right?
“Not so fast,” says Laszlo Horvath, who spends a whole lot more time with pallets than most of us as director of the Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design at Virginia Tech.

The forgotten shipping pallet stages a pandemic-era rally.

After carrying the weight of the global economy since World War II with little fanfare, the lowly shipping pallet is finally commanding some respect. Demand for the platforms used to haul nearly every consumer good or industrial ingredient is soaring amid a surge in e-commerce, forcing retailers and manufacturers to expand warehouses or pile inventories higher. At the same time, two keys to production -- cheap lumber and labor -- are scarce, and even nail costs are rising.
The result: Pallet prices have hit record highs, according to a U.S. Labor Department index.
