This was the 2014 spring meeting of the Allegheny Dry Kiln Club, a group representing hardwood manufacturers involved in hardwood lumber production and drying. Many group members are suppliers of raw material for various processes at MWV (bark, sawdust, chips). The spring meeting started with a tour of the MWV mill facilities in the morning; followed buy lunch at the Best Western; a short business meeting followed by education sessions. The educational sessions included: a presentation of chip quality for MWV, a presentation on VisionTally, an automated lumber tally system; finally a question and answer session on lumber drying. The group toured the biomass chip yard, paper chip yard, roundwood yard and paper machines 1 and 2. The gained insight into the volume of material used, quality of raw material desired for each production process, how raw material was processed and handled and finally used to make the finished product.
