The Virginia rules and regulations governing the use current wood preservatives. in the Commonwealth.  Focus will be on the specific aspects of the regulations that affect the wood treating industry including any changes or new provisions in the past year.

Review of the Chemicals and Treatment Processes. Brian Bond, Virginia Tech

A review of the chemical properties, characteristics, and environmental hazards of commonly applied waterborne preservatives, Creosote and Pentachlophenol. This session will include a review of the various processes used to apply these preservatives to wood. 

10:15 - 10:30

Chemicals and Information Updates.  Brian Bond, Virginia Tech

Presentation of chemical formulations, their effectiveness and environmental impacts will be covered. 

10:30 - 10:45  Break
10:45 - 11:15

Insects and Decay of Wood, Brian Bond, Virginia Tech

Review of pests and IPM programs, and identification of pests related to wood preservation, including types of decay.

11:015 – 12:00

Safety in Wood Treating.  Brian Bond, Virginia Tech

The focus will be on a review of the safety practices and procedures practiced in the wood treating industry.  Information will include the types of personal protective equipment needed in wood treating plants including the selection criteria, handling, storage, and cleaning of the various items.  Also, included will be the proper handling of disposal clothing and equipment.

The program will be held in the conference room of the Virginia Department of Forestry, 900 Natural Resources Drive, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903
