Dr. Kim and his research team (his research lab: www.sustainablepackaging.sbio.vt.edu) is focusing on "industrial problem solving" and "new packaging system developments." It includes developing new packaging materials, composites, and its structure and functionality using a variety of natural or synthetic polymers, functional ingredients and active agents such as antioxidants or antimicrobials derived from biomaterials. Studying composite structures with nanomaterials such as carbon based nanomaterials or other inorganic nanomaterials are actively going on. Extraction of biopolymeric materials from biomass such as production of nanocellulose and active ingredients from agricultural wastes and its utilization in packaging has been funded from government and private industry sectors.

He is a core faculty member of the Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design (CPULD), the Center for Performance Packaging Systems (CP2S) and Macromolecules Innovation Institutes. He is teaching SBIO 3214: Paper and Paperboard Packaging, SBIO 3284: Plastic Packaging Polymers and Production, and SBIO 4124: Food and Health Care Packaging.
