Biomaterials and Bioenergy

Biomaterials and Bioenergy
DEGREE OPTION - Wood Materials Science
The field of Biomaterials and Bioenergy focuses on sustainable plant-based materials and the science and chemistry involved in making renewable products and bioenergy from those materials. Students learn the basic principles of how these sustainable biomaterials are produced in nature, and how they can be used to make a variety of advanced products. Students apply basic science principles in areas ranging from nanotechnology applications through to the production of biofuels and energy-storage devices made from natural polymers. The use of renewable materials is the common thread in this option and students learn how these materials can be used to produce products ranging from advanced structural composites to novel drug delivery systems. There is strong job market, for graduates in this exciting and growing field.
Invent the next generation of bio-based fuels: we must reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and plants will help us do that. Learn how plants create materials; and learn how we can release that solar energy to power our homes and cars. Find out more, contact a student ambassador .
Associate Professor Scott Renneckar - Lyocell yarn Celluloid
Enhance human health using natural polymers: nature creates tons of different "polymers", or chain-like molecules. Learn how we transform natural polymers into new cancer treatments, or non-polluting materials.
